10 Steps to Winterize Your Home

As we get closer to winter, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your seasonal properties for vacancy during the long winter months. By being proactive in your approach, you may be able to avoid costly issues and some major frustrations.

Follow these simple steps and feel confident knowing your home is equipped for the season:

  1. Turn off gas line & water: Avoid gas related incidents & prevent pipes from bursting
  2. Adjust thermostat: Keep home around 50-55 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing
  3. Clean out your fridge and pantry: Put any nonperishable items in air-tight containers to prevent insects from invading. Additionally, wipe down your fridge, unplug it, and leave the door open to avoid mold and unwanted smells.
  4. Engage security system or double check all door locks are functioning properly
  5. Thoroughly clean each room or hire a housecleaner: Be sure to remove all trash
  6. Check that your gutters are clear and drain spouts secured
  7. Let you neighbors know that you’re leaving so someone can keep an eye on your property
  8. Storm-proof: If your place is in an area prone to storms, prepare your windows and store outdoor furniture and decorations inside
  9. Set up a plan for weather emergencies: Know who will shovel and salt your walkways
  10. Do an HVAC check: Remove window units, inspect furnace, and check that oil is full (where applicable)

If you utilize the above checklist, your home should be ready to take on the upcoming winter months, providing you with some reassuring peace of mind.
